Smiling directly affects aesthetic appearance and plays a very important role in social communication. A beautiful and healthy smile helps people communicate more confidently and effectively. Studies show that the two most striking elements during communication are smile and eyes. In recent years, smile design has become widely used for aesthetic expectations of patients.
What is Smile Design?
Smile design, which is among the most preferred aesthetic dentistry treatments, is performed to correct problems that exist in the appearance of teeth and to design a personalized smile. With smile design treatments, a natural appearance is aimed by improving the disproportion of teeth and gums, shape or deformities asthetically, whilst taking into account the facial features of the patient. Smile design is a multidisciplinary approach and is performed by applying many different processes together in a treatment.
Which Procedures Are included in Smile Design?
The needs of each patient are very different and a treatment plan is designed individually to suit needs best. When determining the procedures to be performed, a patients age, gender, facial features is taken into account.
Before starting the treatment, the oral health of the individual is examined in great detail. Firstly, the patient’s existing decayed teeth and any gum disease is treated. After the patient’s oral health is stabilised, necessary gingival aesthetic, teeth whitening, implant and prosthesis/crowns treatments and steps to eliminate tooth deficiencies are performed. This can be with use of laminates, veneers/crowns and orthodontic treatment, all within the scope of smile design.
How is Smile Design Performed?
In order to get a truly effective result in smile design, first of all, the specialist and the patient will make a realistic dental plan together. The patient’s expectations will be taken into account and their dental plan needs will be determined accordingly. At the start of the planning phase, intraoral and facial photographs of the patients mouth are recorded and measurements are made with the help of computerised programs and the adaptation to the face shape is then planned. After the treatment, images of the proposed target appearance are shown to the patient and their approval is obtained.
After the completion of the planning stage, when orthodontic treatment is not needed, the existing disorders in the gums are treated.
When there are missing teeth, necessary treatments such as dentla implants or crown-bridge use are performed.
When the surgical treatments are completed, teeth whitening can also be used if required.
When these stages are complete, aesthetic composite fillings are performed to correct any deformities in the teeth. If composite filling alone is not sufficient, the process is then continued with zirconium, porcelain or laminated veneers/crowns. In line with the needs of the patient, botox or fillings to the lip and face area and similar medical aesthetic treatments can also be performed for optimum results. During the treatment process the patients opinion matters and will be is continuously involved in the planning and aesthetics throughout.
How Many Days Does Smile Design Take?
Smile design treatment varies, according to the dental needs and wishes of the individual. Depending on the restorations and additional treatments required, full smile design treatments can be completed in approximately 4-10 days.
