What is Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontics, as it is commonly known, includes the treatment of dental disorders that may occur at an early age, or in later age due to late treatment.
Orthodontic treatment usually begins around the age of 9-14. However, the American Orthodontic Society recommends that all children should meet with an orthodontist before the age of 7 in order to control the development of primary teeth prior to their replacement with permanent teeth. With early detection, possible orthodontic problems will be diagnosed sooner and solved more easily. However, with the development of technology, orthodontic treatment can now be performed on adults.
What are the Methods Used in Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontics is generally a progressive treatment method by attaching braces to tooth surfaces.
Examples are
– Metal Braces
– Ceramic Braces
– Sapphire (Ice) Braces
– Damon (With Lid) Metal Braces
– Damon (With Lid) Transparent Braces
– Lingual Braces
– Orthodontic treatments with clear aligners (Invisalign)
There are many types of braces used, varying according to the type and budget for treatment.
How Should Oral and Dental Care Be Done in Orthodontic Treatment?
One of the most important points in orthodontic treatment is regular oral and dental care. Teeth should be brushed after every meal. Food residues that may remain between the braces should be thoroughly cleaned. Otherwise, leftover food can adversely affect your oral and dental health.
Also, dental rubbers, which are mandatory to be used in orthodontic treatment according to specific cases, can cause damage to both your teeth and gums, as they cause the accumulation of bacteria and microorganisms in the mouth. The only way to prevent this, is to take care of your oral and dental health.
The choice of toothbrush used is also very important. Since there are braces and wires in the mouth, special orthodontic brushes and interface brushes should be used in orthodontic treatments. First, the teeth should be brushed normally with an orthodontic brush, without putting too much pressure on the gums from the gingiva to the tooth. Then, the interface brush should be brushed between all braces. Your tooth brushing time will be prolonged, due to the presence of braces on the teeth. You need to brush for 3-5 minutes on average. Oral care should also be supported by the use of daily mouthwash.
How Long Do Orthodontic Treatments Take?
It varies depending on many factors, such as the age of the patient, the rate of development, the development of the jaw, the degree of crowding, the treatment method used and its details.
